"The One and All" (2002; 8 mins; HD), premiered in competition at the Oberhausen International Short Film festival. The film was made during those scary days immediately after the attacks of September 11 as the US rolled out its assault on Iraq as well as on the civil liberties o the domestic population. In many ways the fears to which "The One and All" gave expression have come to pass and have been naturalizd to the point that few of us even recognize the changes that the response to 9/11 have made permanent in the US and around the world. As Theodor Adorno argued long ago, "No universal history leads from barbarism to humanitarianism, but there is one leading from the slingshot to the megaton bomb. ... [T]he One and All that keeps rolling on to this day—with occasional breathing spells--is the absolute of suffering."
